 Thanks, now I see the reason. From SML/NJ's web site it still says "we are
 working on support for the Arm64 architecture", thus perhaps the latest
 released version still cannot run on arm64.

 Anyway, I'm still using Intel Macs, and will be glad to help testing the
 updated port definitions.
