 The compiler choice was rolled back for this exact reason here, but to
 prevent clang-17:

 according to what I saw months ago, clang-16 was OK with this issue.
 Perhaps something is different, or perhaps there are subtleties to
 consider (or perhaps I was incorrect, and clang-16 has always had this
 issue too, although that would be a bit odd that I thought it was OK back
 then).
