 I do see from the log that MacPorts `ar` and `ranlib` are being used. If
 you want to test if those are interfering, do the same as above, except
 that the port to deactivate before and reactivate after is cctools.

 It would help to do these tests one at a time so that we know which of the
 two ports, if any, are causing the problem.
