Comment (by reneeotten):

 on the HS buildbot I see these warnings in the logs, none of that is
 present on newer OSes:
 {{{
 [9/42] Linking static target extern/agg24-svn/libagg.a
 warning: /opt/local/bin/ranlib: warning for library:
 extern/agg24-svn/libagg.a the table of contents is empty (no object file
 members in the library define global symbols)
 warning: ranlib: warning for library: extern/agg24-svn/libagg.a the table
 of contents is empty (no object file members in the library define global
 symbols)
 [10/42] Compiling C++ object extern/ttconv/libttconv.a.p/ttutil.cpp.o
 [11/42] Compiling C++ object extern/ttconv/libttconv.a.p/pprdrv_tt.cpp.o
 [12/42] Compiling C++ object extern/ttconv/libttconv.a.p/pprdrv_tt2.cpp.o
 [13/42] Linking static target extern/ttconv/libttconv.a
 warning: /opt/local/bin/ranlib: warning for library:
 extern/ttconv/libttconv.a the table of contents is empty (no object file
 members in the library define global symbols)
 warning: ranlib: warning for library: extern/ttconv/libttconv.a the table

 symbols)
 }}}

 so I suspect that's the issue.
