Comment (by ryandesign):

Software shouldn't be the problem; we just don't have hardware to run
PowerPC buildbot workers. Years ago I had a Power Mac G5 running the
Leopard PowerPC builds until its power supply died. I have two other Power
Mac G5s I acquired to replace it that don't work either, plus PowerBooks,
iMacs and a Power Mac G4 that either don't work and/or are too slow to
keep up with the volume of changes MacPorts undergoes (not that the G5
could really manage it either). Even if we could get a working PowerPC
machine I'm not sure how long its power supply would last. And they do use
 a lot of power.

For a time I entertained the idea of running PowerPC build machines in
emulation using qemu on our newest Apple Silicon build machines and
although I could get macOS installed, I had inexplicable problems getting
MacPorts to work. The error messages I was getting from MacPorts didn't
make sense to me and made me wonder if the emulation software was faulty.
The need to reclaim that experiment's disk space for current macOS builds
prevented me from investigating further. We may acquire a new Apple
Silicon build machine soon that would allow me to revisit that experiment.
I'm not sure it will be fast enough either though because it only emulates
 a single-core processor.
