 I believe both expat and libxml2 have always been much more supported than
 Xerces but both are C, not C++, and I have no real experience with either
 of them. For all I know, they also lack maintainers these days.

 For very specific uses, RapidXML might be worth a look, but that's far
 from a real XML parser, it's more useful for configuration scenarios (and
 is probably all but orphaned as well, but its self-imposed limitations
 make that risk less dire).
