 Thanks!  Removing gcc8/libgcc8 did indeed fix the problem.

 That ton of stuff was far worse yesterday, before I ran port uninstall
 inactive and cleared out a lot of more obviously unused things, and there
 were also things like other variations of Python 3 and related Python
 packages, and even more versions of gcc/libgcc that I've been removing
 manually.  It's a work in progress.
