Comment:

 Since there has been no response to my request for guidance on the mailing
 list, and since it worked for you, I'll commit the update I proposed as
 is. I did also verify that i386-elf-gcc and x86_64-elf-gcc @12.4.0 built
 on my macOS 12 system.
