 Looks like this happened because I tried to make a Time Machine backup.
 The backup failed:

 "The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to
 make more space available by removing expired backups during the next
 scheduled backup."

 This makes it sound like it ran out of space on the backup drive, but I
 found a 23GiB sparsebundle in
 /private/var/db/com.apple.backupd.backupVerification that the backup
 process apparently created and didn't consider it important to delete upon
 failure.
