 Okay, I see, thank you for a detailed reply.

 P. S. On a side note, I think that `__ORDER_BIG_ENDIAN__` is not
 recognized by Xcode gcc (while it is the correct macro for the modern
 gcc), so we need to see what Apple headers define and use that (or better
 both, since there is no way to know beforehand which gcc versions is being
 used).
