 In #71699 you said:

 > Thanks dead wine.

which I interpreted to mean that you had installed or were trying to
install a version of one of the wine ports older than what we currently
 offer.

This is what I meant by an older wine. Wine 4.9 is old. I
 [changeset:e4b2b23e515e28fab51e8436105e6e24cafb0214/macports-ports updated
MacPorts wine-devel to that version in mid 2020]. Since then, the port has
been rewritten by and is being maintained by a different maintainer.

With our wine-devel 4.9 port, if you used the universal variant, which was
enabled by default, it built for 32-bit and 64-bit Intel as you might
expect. If you disabled the universal variant, you got only the 32-bit
version (unlike with most other ports on a 64-bit machine where not using
the universal variant would get you the 64-bit version). Either way, its
 dependencies need to be universal.

The current version of the wine-devel port is 9.21 and is 64-bit only (so
it doesn't require dependencies to be universal) but it does not support
 macOS Sierra.
