Comment (by jmroot):

 Specifying a port name on the command line always looks it up via the
 index. If you want to use the Portfile in the current directory, you have
 to use the `current` pseudoport (which is implicitly used when you don't
 specify a port to operate on any other way). The strangest thing here is
 that `port fetch` ran the checksum target?
