 The issue is that the macports version of ipython is still not up to date
 with the upstream version. I ran into the same problem on another mac
 (different from the one for which I initially filed this ticket), and the
 fix was to update ipython with `pip install --upgrade ipython`. Note that
 if you do this, make sure that the location of `ipython` thus installed is
 in your `PATH`.
