 Sorry, but I can not see any MacPorts-specific user on the system.

 I installed the beta package from ~/Downloads (perms: drwx------+ 12
 <user> staff). /opt/local is set to the default perm: drwxr-xr-x   14 root
 wheel

 I applied the patch to:

 /opt/local/libexec/macports/lib/macports1.0/macports.tcl

 That appears to have resolved the issue:
