 Good thought about security. I opened an existing file, and it did ask for
 permission to the folder. Is there another explicit way to grant
 permissions? (It doesn't show up in system
 settings/Privacy/Files&Folders). Now it at least seems to save changes to
 the modified file. So I guess that is a work-around to create a new file
 (clone a file, rename, open it, clear it out). But there is still no
 dialog box for new documents. And "save as" fails, as well (no dialog). I
 found a discussion on the wxmaxima github site about the same issue:
