 I should have mentioned the architecture as it's relevant.  The hardware
 is an iMac G5, so it's PPC 970.  I obtained this ancient system because
 it's helpful in ensuring the portability of open-source software I
 maintain to have a big-endian system which will fault on misaligned
 accesses.
