Comment:

 OK, I heard back — it seems the problem is that the last sync removed the
 execute bit from the top-level directory, so that needs to be fixed at the
 source, i.e., by Ryan.

 The admins manually re-added the top-level directory x bit for now, which
 solves the immediate problem. However, there might be others missing from
 lower level directories.
