Comment (by ballapete):

Five years ago Ken Cunningham tried to find a solution in #62994.

#69770 describes the same problem with coreutils-9.5_0.

 #69701, #64492 describe the same problem with m4 1.4.19.

 #69602, #69084, #67913, #67882, #63059 describe the same problem with m4
 @1.4.19_1.

#66028 describes the same problem with coreutils-9.1.

#64373 describes the same problem with findutils @4.7.0_1.

#63603 describes the same problem with bison @3.8.2. Has a "solution" to
patch the directory's name to something longer, and also this simple one:
 https://trac.macports.org/attachment/ticket/63603/configure-PATH_MAX-
 bug.diff.

#58927 describes the same problem with findutils @4.7.0_0 – seven years
 ago!

#50567 describes the same problem with findutils 4.6.0 – the original from
ten years ago, contains hint to something like a "granularity of path name
lengths": when in the centre another iteration is possible that leads to
hard failure (incorrect test for length of new path name, maybe omitted
 for directories?).

A handy solution to clean up GNUlib's debris is /opt/local/bin/grm from
 coreutils-devel @9.10_0.

 https://github.com/macports/macports-
 ports/commit/bf21bffc6b82bea9cf8fb7aca073af9e0935d3d1 has solution for
libunistring with `PortGroup gnulib 1.0`, committed also as
 https://github.com/macports/macports-
 ports/commit/000c0f36b1ab1affc8406a7851c817e18f473af4 for rcs. This also
 seems to work for `findutils-4.11.0`:

Compilation (build) succeeded, waiting to be able to test and to upgrade.
