Comment (by Dave-Allured):

 Well that did not work either.  MacPorts added `-DCMAKE_C_STANDARD=11` to
 the CMake invocation.  However, the individual compile commands remained
 unchanged, including the one that hit the declarator error.  Will try
 something else, not right away.
