 It would be simpler to give the compiler a flag telling it to use an older
 mode, e.g. `configure.cflags-append -std=gnu99`.

 The compile failure in c23 mode, and the fact that the build doesn't
 specify a `-std` flag for the mode it wants, are both upstream bugs that
 should be reported to the developers of apr-util.
