 > MacPorts installs dylibs mostly as a triple à la lib{name}.dylib,
 lib{name}.{major}.dylib, lib{name}.{major}.{minor}.dylib. Only the latter
is a real file, the others are symlinks. A programme depending on that
dylib can be linked to any of the three. If linked to
lib{name}.{major}.{minor}.dylib it will need re-linking (rebuild) every
time the dylib's minor version number changes, in other cases quite seldom
when linked to the major version number, and almost never when linked to
lib{name}.dylib. (It depends on the lib's API rules whether they change in
a way that compatibility is partly or completely lost.) Maybe NumPY binds
 cleverly to a well-behaving dylib…

 recorded dylib names.

Thanks for the info - very handy to know.

And, yes, I have heard of install_name_tool - I tried using it to change a
non-existent dylib entry in the results from {{{otool -L <path to
.dylib>}}} for the dylib from the PyIP package ''pipdeptree''.
