 Of course the `date` (or `gdate`) invocation is faulty!

 `$DATEOPT$delta` should better be two separate words (for legibility), and
 the line

 {{{
 delta=`expr $now - $STARTTIME`
 }}}

 should be two lines:

 {{{
 delta=`expr $now - $STARTTIME`
 touch $delta
 }}}
