Comment:
If the reason for your ticket is to request that starship not depend on
rust, that is not possible because, as advertised on [https://starship.rs
the starship web site], using rust is one of starship's features:
> Rust-Powered \\
> Brings the best-in-class speed and safety of Rust, to make your prompt
as quick and reliable as possible.
If the reason is to report that rust fails to build on Mojave, that's
already reported in #73957, as you know.
Depending on rust is not a problem, and does not incur a long build time,
when a precompiled archive is available. However, precompiled archives of
starship and rust were not available for you on Mojave because, as you
discovered, rust does not build on Mojave.
starship does not have extensive MacPorts dependencies: it depends on
rust, rust's package manager cargo, cmake, pkgconfig, libgit2, ncurses,
and zlib. It does have extensive dependencies on cargo modules, listing
over 400 of them in the Portfile, but this seems to be how software
written in rust is designed to work, and MacPorts will download and use
those cargo dependencies for you without you needing to do anything.
We cannot provide you with an older version of just starship, because it's
not the version of starship that's incompatible with your system; it's the
version of rust. The rust port is already programmed to provide older
compatible versions of rust to older systems. This simply needs to be
extended to the systems like Mojave on which the currently provided
version does not build.
If you wish, you can try to go back to a prior version of the rust port
and see if that's compatible with your system, using
wiki:howto/InstallingOlderPort. Or, resolve #73957 by contributing a fix
for the rust port that makes it use that older compatible version on
affected older systems.
