Comment (by ryandesign):
Bring in some of my comments from the PR:
> The user didn't specify their OS version but it was filed in October
2014 against ctags @5.8_1 compiled in November 2012, which means the
newest OS X version they could have been using was 10.8 Mountain Lion.

> Doing a little testing on OS X 10.7 Lion with Xcode 4.6.3 (released June
2013) containing Apple LLVM version 4.2 (clang-425.0.28) (based on LLVM
3.2svn), I built the following versions from git history:
>
> * 5.8_4 (where Josh fixed overlapping strcpy properly in June 2021)
> * 5.8_3 (where I fixed implicit function declarations in January 2021)
> * 5.8_2 (where the conflict with xemacs was removed in November 2015)
> * 5.8_1 (with improvements to the PHP parser in November 2012)
> * 5.8_0 (with optimization reduction to work around overlapping strcpy
in May 2012)
> * 5.8_0 (prior to optimization reduction in July 2009)
> * 5.7_0 (from September 2007)

I didn't read the ticket closely enough and neglected to notice that even
for the reporter here, +regex was shown in `ctags --version`, however the
regex feature didn't work like it did on Linux.
Going back to test the reporter's reproduction recipe with the above
versions, none of them output the line `test test.js /^ test =
function(){$/;" f` that the reporter expected it to. Or do you see this
output on your system, Saj?
