 'universal' is a variant that is meant to work with the port (see {{{port
 info giflib5}}}).  Legacy systems need libraries to support +universal so
 apps can be built for different systems (Apple shipped their libraries
 universal).  It was broken, so it was included in my fixes.  I have tested
 building on 10.5.8 & 10.11.6 Intel, +universal.  +universal use to be the
 default, so many old macports installations have their ports installed
 that way.
