 I believe the real test is whether `${macportsuser}` can successfully run
 `xcrun metal --version`, because there have been cases of regular users
 being able to run that successfully, but the same command failing when run
 as `${macportsuser}`. I was just working on https://github.com/macports
 /macports-ports/pull/32889 today to improve the error messages for ports
 that require the Metal toolchain, which also uses this test.
