 This has been broken for a long time and it's a big problem for those of
 us using Pandoc. The correct solution would be a fix to the ghc stuff or
 to the Haskell portgroup but no one is going to figure out how to do that
 without a significant blast radius. For now, I'm preparing a patch for the
 pandoc Portfile to override the C compiler when building Pandoc, which
 would seem like the straightforward small thing to do. judaew has not
 responded here after months, so I'm taking it upon myself to fix it. If it
 works, I will apply it; judaew can undo it if he has a more elegant fix
 later on.
