 I did port uninstall, clean, clean --dist, clean --archive on texlive-bin,
 to retry the install from scratch. The directory in question was no longer
 around after cleanup, but same result.

 see the end of main.log after fetching, patching and a long rebuild

 IMU gzip command is failing when compressing the whatis file
 {{{
 -rw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel  10745 Dec  3  2017 whatis
 }}}

 **WORKAROUND**

 Running the command

 {{{
 sudo --user=MacPorts gzip .../whatis
 }}}
 on the file produces the expected whatis.gz without errors (maybe
 privileges are dropped by mistake in the Makefile?)

 then the install can be retried and succeeds.
