 Martin Gieseking sent an explanation for the failures related to the
 `bool` variable name:

 As of C23 (which is the default in GCC 15), "bool" is a keyword and thus
 can no longer be used as an identifier. Therefore, you should call GCC
 with -std=c17, e.g. by adding it to CFLAGS, to ensure that the code is
 compiled against a compatible C standard. Alternatively, compile with a
 GCC version < 15.
