#74399: PostgreSQL18 won't run on Tahoe / M5 ?

Comment (by dgilman):

Well, I tried it out on Tahoe 26.6.2 and I have it working. The port notes
ask you to `port select postgresql postgresql18`, however I don't think
this is strictly required, everything was able to path itself correctly
 without postgresql18 being selected.

 After `port load` you should get `ps -ef` results. Start with `launchctl
 print system/org.macports.postgresql18-server` and `log show --last 1h
--predicate 'process == "daemondo" OR eventMessage CONTAINS
"org.macports.postgresql18-server"' --info` to try and see if you can get
 error logs.

When the `postgresql18-sever` port is installed MacPorts creates a local
user for the service. You can check for it with `dscl . -read
 /Users/postgres`, it should have `NFSHomeDirectory: /opt/local/var/db`. If
that is not there you might have to install/reinstall postgresql18-server
to get it recreated, and I would grab those verbose logs with `port -d
 install ...`

Finally, when you're up and running, you need to make sure you're using
the right psql. Your error output above has
`/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432` which means your $PATH didn't have the
MacPorts psql as psql. Use `/opt/local/bin/psql18` explicitly at first to
be confident you're using the right one. If I run it by itself I get this
 error message:

`psql18: error: connection to server on socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"
failed: FATAL: role "myunixusername" does not exist`

as a freshly installed postgresql database does not have a role set up for
my user. You can get in as the default (superuser) role via
`/opt/local/bin/psql18 -U postgres` and from there you can add additional
roles and such. If you want to control how users can authenticate to
postgres you have to edit the usual
 `/opt/local/var/db/postgresql18/defaultdb/pg_hba.conf` which is installed
 with upstream's defaults.
