Problem installing mysql, pgsql, and php

Elias,

Thanks for trying to help. I had been trying to do my installs from  
the terminal, but sure enough I would spend hours installing   
something like the GD libraries only to run  into a glitch with  
dependencies, and come to a grinding halt.

I eventually tried FINK and did not like the way it handled things,  
for some reason having /sw seemed to bother me. Anyway,  hopefully  
MacPorts will work for me. I am using PortAuthority which  I also  
downloaded a couple of days ago...

THIS didn't quite work....

% sudo port selfupdate
Password:
Error: /opt/local/bin/port: selfupdate failed: Couldn't sync dports

I will try to re-install MacPorts

I had just downloaded and installed this a couple of days  ago

Not sure where to go from here, I can try to re-install rsync

I use PsyncX all the time, and I think it relies on rsync
