Well, the thing is that I'm out of my depth. I've figured out that I
can download sources, read the INSTALL file, and try it out. But as
soon as something goes wrong I'm as helpless as a babe in the woods.

Right. If I understood what I was doing I'd happily contribute. I feel
as though I've got a few beginners hurdles to trip over before I can do good.
Ryan sent some links to the old port docs and suggested that I read the
portfiles to get familiar with them.
