How to get a binary only archive?

Thanks! One more question: would this be in Universal form? I tried
$ sudo port mpkg gnumeric +universal
and it gave me
Error: Error executing universal: Default universal variant only works with
ports based on configure
Error: Unable to execute port: Error evaluating variants
