Does /bin/sh exist and can you run it? On my system:

$ ls -l /bin/sh
-r-xr-xr-x   1 root  wheel  1068844 Dec 12  2006 /bin/sh
$ /bin/sh
$ exit
$

What OS are you on? What processor? What version of Xcode?
