They just enable some backwards-compatibility for really old bdb
files (and we can probably safely move them to a variant if they're
causing lots of build failures).

There's something fishy with people having build problems with db44/
db4, but I don't think the problem's been isolated anywhere yet (I've
never been able to reproduce it).
