texinfo manuals

Hi All.

(This is probably more a macports-devel question/suggestion, but I am
not subscribed there.)

Many ports do install their info-manuals in ${prefix}/share/info/
which is good.
Emacs does not display their entries in the *info* buffer by default,
because the directory does not have an dir entry. Would it therefore
be useful, to have individual ports add their info-manual to such a
info dir? Could be done easily by something like (untested)
   depends_lib   port:texinfo
   post-destroot { system "install-info ${prefix}/share/info/gsl-
ref.info  ${prefix}/share/info/dir" }
for gsl.

Has this been discussed before? (Searching for "info" is quite
useless, searching for texinfo did not bring up much along these lines).
What could a general policy on this issue be?

Greetings,
Jochen
