ooh, I knew I smelled something ... ;-) you have fink installed as well, it
looks like.

They don't co-exist very well. You'll need to figure out which you want to
use, I think, unless things have gotten better.

my MacPorts-installed libiconv has these parts:

Port libiconv contains:
  /opt/local/bin/iconv
  /opt/local/include/iconv.h
  /opt/local/include/libcharset.h
  /opt/local/include/localcharset.h
  /opt/local/lib/libcharset.1.0.0.dylib
  /opt/local/lib/libcharset.1.dylib
  /opt/local/lib/libcharset.a
  /opt/local/lib/libcharset.dylib
  /opt/local/lib/libcharset.la
/opt/local/lib/libiconv.2.4.0.dylib <-- this is what you want, correct?
  /opt/local/lib/libiconv.2.dylib
  /opt/local/lib/libiconv.a
  /opt/local/lib/libiconv.dylib
  /opt/local/lib/libiconv.la
  /opt/local/share/doc/iconv.1.html
  /opt/local/share/doc/iconv.3.html
  /opt/local/share/doc/iconv_close.3.html
  /opt/local/share/doc/iconv_open.3.html
  /opt/local/share/doc/iconvctl.3.html
  /opt/local/share/locale/af/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/da/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/el/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/eo/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/et/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/fi/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/ga/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/gl/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/hr/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/hu/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/id/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/it/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/nl/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/pl/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/pt_BR/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/rm/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo

  /opt/local/share/locale/sl/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo

  /opt/local/share/locale/uk/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/vi/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/wa/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/zh_CN/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/locale/zh_TW/LC_MESSAGES/libiconv.mo
  /opt/local/share/man/man1/iconv.1.gz
  /opt/local/share/man/man3/iconv.3.gz
  /opt/local/share/man/man3/iconv_close.3.gz
  /opt/local/share/man/man3/iconv_open.3.gz
  /opt/local/share/man/man3/iconvctl.3.gz

port install libiconv will get you that. Not sure how to work around a
firewall, but that's come up on the mailing
list<http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=macports+rsync+firewall&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8>a
few times.
