port usage

Hi, as a mac and macports beginner I have a few questions.

1) if I do
port upgrade outdated
does it use the same variants options (like +x11)
as was used for the older version of the package
beeing upgraded?

How can I find out that the file
/opt/local/etc/ports/variants.conf
is used - these should be globaly defined variants,
but I can't see if its used or not....


2) Is there a way/option to see what will
port install something
do, which dependencies will be included in the installation?

Comming from gentoo linux their port system command emerge
had and --pretend option which would just report
what is going to be done but would not do it for real.
Is there something similar here?
