bogus activating mesgs

mac 0s X 10.4.10 Intel Core Duo 1.86 GHz darwin 8.10.1

When upgrading outdated ports via PortAuthority I keep getting the  
mesg Activating ghostscript 8.54_0 although I have ghostscript 8.6  
installed. The message repeats about 5 times (and apparently fails  
each time).

How do I fix this?

also do I need to add something to MANPATH variable in order to see  
the man pages various ports install?  How do I do this?

As you may guess Im a beginner here :)
