Specifying an install directory

I'll probably get to upgrading php after I figure out how to use it well. Right now I don't want to break something that is already working.

  well, the docs are quite stale. the go-pear.org domain is expired and for sale, so that's busted. 

  I don't see why it wouldn't. Is there some reason to run the stock Apple php (PHP 4.4.7 ) vs  a more recent and perhaps more extensible one?
