This sounds like a known bug in an older version of Gnucash (that I  
thought Macports had updated past).  In that version, the issue was  
that the splash screen also got in front of  dialog box complaining  
about a file failure on shut-down.  The work-around was to start  
gnucash from the command-line without loading a file, then load the  
file.
