Installing Mac ports on Leopard

I am new to MACs, so my question may be very elementary. I was trying to
install Geomview. For this, it was suggested I first installed Mac ports.
I followed the links and instructions. Everything seemed to be going fine,
I even got a message saying the installation (of Mac ports) was successful.
The problem is that it is nowhere to be found on the system. The "port"
command cannot be found. How can I know what went wrong? Why was I told
the install was successful?

Thanks

P. Laval
