dealing with ports that can't upgrade

Another possibility:
$ sudo port upgrade outdated and not metacity

This prevents the upgrade of metacity while applying all other upgrades. 
You would have to specify it every time doing upgrades, but already a 
lot better than having to specify a list of outdated ports manually.
