Unable to execute port: can't read "sysroot": no such variable

Ok, so your MacPorts was outdated. MacPorts 1.5 did not contain the  
sysroot variable which the port you're trying to install wants to  
use. So you need to update to MacPorts 1.6, which selfupdate should  
do...

...except it can't because you have no acceptable C compiler  
installed. Install Xcode 3 to get the gcc compiler, then try the  
selfupdate again.
