Leopard, curl, proxy problem

Hi all,

I am unable to sort out what must be a silly proxy / curl / macports
config issue on Leopard. I've scraped the web for solutions, but
found none.

I am installing MacPorts 1.6 (from DMG or svn source, no difference)
on a Leopard Intel box. We are behind an http proxy, which I have
configured precisely on the Leopard box as on my Tiger (also Intel)
box.

However, "sudo port install xv" hangs when it tries to fetch:

jpegsrc.v6b.tar.gz from http://www.ijg.org/files

It just sits there, then eventually tries another source for the file,
then another. Clearly (I think) a proxy problem.

Peculiar thing is, that curl from the command line works just fine ...

curl http://www.ijg.org/files/jpegsrc.v6b.tar.gz

What gives? I've played with the macports.conf file which allows you
to indicate shell vars that shouldn't be deleted etc., but to no
avail.

I hope someone can help, or at least agree this is an issue on Leopard.

thanks,
 - David Barnes.
