I also have run into even more vexing problems with gnuplot (version 4.2.2
to use with Octave) and it occured to me that it might be useful to mention
them here. In a nutshell:

On a Mac Pro under X.4.11, exporting GNUTERM=aqua|x11 (the '|' is an 'or')
failed to produce a plot window. Neither it nor error message appeared.
Nothing worked until I created the file '~/.MacOSX/environment.plist'
holding the GNUTERM variable and its value. So far only the value 'x11'
works, with gnuplot opening in an X11 window. Without my having installed
AquaTerm separately from what came with Octave (e.g. from MacPorts), set-
ting the value to 'aqua' produces nothing.

I don't know how relevant this is to the gnuplot problems discussed here,
but if there is interest I can forward my latest email exchange with Thomas
Treichl on the Octave list.
