Ok, good, that means then there likely was an old copy of that folder 
around from a previous install attempt.

sudo port install mysql5 +server is what we ran. If there was some 
old cruft lying around, that would explain why it was so deucedly 
hard to do anything.

I'm not sure why there was a bad set of files present in the first place.
