I just confirmed the problem on my G4 so it's just a PowerPC thing,
not a 64-bit thing.
I filed http://trac.macports.org/ticket/20833 for this problem.

No worries: The build did not succeed, so your old build is still
installed and active. "port installed php5" should confirm this.
