I wanted to confirm that I get this error too, on Mac OS X 10.5.6
Intel with Xcode 3.1.2 and MacPorts 1.7.0.
I see this error reported previously in this ticket:
http://trac.macports.org/ticket/13466
which is closed as a duplicate of this ticket:
http://trac.macports.org/ticket/13693
which was allegedly fixed 15 months ago. Clearly not, and/or the
problem has resurfaced.
Unfortunately gnustep-base has no maintainer so someone with an
interest in this problem will need to step up and figure out how to
solve it.
