Python26 Build Woes

Hello,

I'm using MacPorts 1.8 on my 10.6.1 system, a 3,1-gen MBP.  Completely
started from scratch, I still can't get the python26 package (with no
variants explicitly stated) to install it eventually dies at:

--->  Computing dependencies for python26
--->  Fetching python26
--->  Verifying checksum(s) for python26
--->  Extracting python26
--->  Applying patches to python26
--->  Configuring python26
--->  Building python26
--->  Staging python26 into destroot
--->  Installing python26 @2.6.2_6+darwin
--->  Activating python26 @2.6.2_6+darwin
Error: Target org.macports.activate returned: Image error:
/Applications/MacPorts/Python 2.6/Build Applet.app/Contents/Info.plist
already exists and does not belong to a registered port. Unable to
activate port python26.
Error: Status 1 encountered during processing.

I have no idea how to solve this problem. I've looked in the forums
and bug reports, but all I could find mentioning this problem is in a
ticket that's marked as closed
(http://trac.macports.org/ticket/20284), yet no indication as to how
to fix the problem, AFAICT.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
pete
